All The Madness

Mad Scientists

Home DNA kits have opened up frontiers, from  catching criminals to people taking DNA tests to find long lost relatives. But DNA test results might affect your LIFE insurance coverage.  Some genetic testing companies sell their information to drug companies and others for research. Federal law prohibits companies to use your genetic information for things like health insurance or a job but that protection doesn’t extend to LIFE Insurance or Long Term care.
Ancestry DNA tests use a saliva sample. “A simple test can reveal your ethnic mix. Like, if you're Irish or Scandinavian - or both,".  Millions of Americans have mailed their saliva to commercial genetics labs. By taking the test, according to most contracts, you’re giving the company a  “perpetual, royalty-free transferable license” to use your DNA. Those words, perpetual and transferable sound like they’ve left it open to sell your DNA, possibly to insurance companies.

What would happen if the DNA databases were hacked?  Most on-line DNA sites say they will destroy your DNA test results if you ask them.

March Madness

The men’s college basketball tournament is made up of 68 teams. On Selection Sunday, before any tournament game is played, those teams are ranked 1 through 68 by the Selection Committee, with the best team in college basketball — based on regular season and conference tournament performance — sitting at No. 1. Four of those teams are eliminated in the opening round of the tournament (known as the First Four), leaving us with a field of 64 for the first round.
